Subtle Acts

Courage is defined as strength in the face of pain, grief, and the ability to do something that frightens one.  I know I have experienced this and most certainly know someone(s) who come to mind when the idea or word “courage” is brought up.

Courageous acts that gain the spotlight, sometimes are performed by people who prefer a more humbled acceptance recognition, and other times by others who love the spotlight and soak in the recognition.  Thank you all!

And at the same time, I discovered courage and courageous acts are not always big, spotlighted, or grandeur – some never even acknowledged.  The courage I observe more often is the quiet gestures and acts of courage.

Who are these people?  Seen on the street in the city: a downtrodden person with only a couple of dollars in their pocket, giving to another to help.   Sitting in a meeting: a mean word or act by a “leader” said to a colleague, and speaking up in defense of someone.  Observed at a hospital: a person facing a health issue alone and sharing an encouraging word to the person waiting in the chair next to you at a health facility. Driving around town: to getting cut off by an aggressive driver and not taking a retaliatory action, but instead, they offer compassion.

Courage comes in many forms, on many levels – many of which will never be recognized, possibly not seen, nor understood for the inter-workings that spur the act.   I encourage you to keep your eyes and ears open.  If you see courage in action, think about that person, offer support or recognition.  Someday, someone may be standing up for you or you for another. Some day, the person acting in courage could be you.

Have you seen these subtle acts of courage?
